Is it possible to display out of stock items on category list, BUT without the bye button?

Yes, specify Disable buy button for Low stock activity and Allow qty below 0 for Backorders on product edit page > inventory tab.

I have done this and it displays now the products, BUT while it displays out of stock, it also displays the Add to cart button and I can add it this item to the cart. I have on product select the disable buy button. 

 

Am I missing something?

Try out Disable buy button on the price tab page.

I have 2 products with exact same inventory settings. One is displayed with no add to cart button on product category and the other one on the same category is displayed with the add to cart button.

 

Stock quantity = 0

Display stock availability = Yes

Display stock quantity = No

Minimum stock quantity = 1

Low Stock Activity = Disable Buy Button

Backorders = Allow Qty Below 0

 

Both products have the same options. Is there something else to check?

Yes it was not checked the disable button. It works ok now. Thanks for your help.
